How to Pronounce Hierarchical
/How to improve English pronunciation: In this episode of Word of the Week, I will go over how to pronounce hierarchical. Hierarchical means that a group of people or things has a system of ranking. This word is a nightmare for many of my clients, but in the video below you will learn to master this challenging word. Yes! The pronunciation of English vowels, silent consonants and word stress can be a challenge.
In this video you will learn the pronunciation of hierarchical, what are the sounds in each syllable, and how to use hierarchical in a sentence.
Not only is knowing how to pronounce English words correctly empowering, but it also means your listeners understand you first time and they can focus on your messages and not on understanding your words. Accent reduction is not necessary, but clarity of speech is.

Hi, my name's Melanie Hussell and the word of the week is hierarchical, another nightmare for most of my clients. Let's have a look at this word. How many syllables? Hi, e, rar, chi, cal. Hierarchical. Five syllables. Now let's have a look at the individual sounds of those syllables. First syllable, (h) h-, (i) eye, long vowel.
Second syllable, uh, short unstressed vowel. Third syllable (r) re, ah, long vowel. Fourth syllable, (ch) ke, i- short vowel. Final syllable, (c) ke, uh, unstressed short vowel. L, cal. Now let's put all of those sounds together. Hi, uh, rar, ki, cal. Where is the stress? Hier- rar- chi-cal. Yes, it's on the third syllable.
Now let's put this together into a sample sentence. Everyone here works quite independently. We're not very hierarchical.
